Safaricom Announces M-Pesa System Maintenance on March 24
Safaricom has scheduled a 30-minute system maintenance on Monday, March 24, from 1:00 AM to 1:30 AM.
During this time, M-Pesa services will experience intermittent disruptions as the company enhances its platform for a better customer experience. However, all other services, including calls, mobile data, and SMS, will remain fully operational.
Why the Maintenance?
Safaricom explained that this scheduled update is part of its ongoing efforts to improve service reliability, security, and overall user experience. The company also emphasized its commitment to continuous innovation in financial technology.
“We are dedicated to offering a reliable, safe, and secure customer experience while connecting our users to endless possibilities,” Safaricom stated in a notice.
To minimize inconvenience, the company has scheduled the maintenance during off-peak hours, ensuring the least disruption to customers. Safaricom also apologized for any temporary inconveniences and expressed gratitude for users’ continued trust and support.
M-Pesa: 18 Years of Financial Innovation
This year, M-Pesa celebrates 18 years since its launch on March 6, 2007. The service revolutionized financial transactions in Kenya, providing millions of unbanked individuals with access to mobile money services.
From its humble beginnings as a domestic money transfer solution, M-Pesa has grown into a financial powerhouse with a presence beyond Kenya’s borders. Initially met with skepticism, its ease of use and convenience quickly gained widespread adoption.
Just a month after launch, M-Pesa had 19,671 active users. By November 2007, that number had surged to over 1 million active users.
Today, M-Pesa is a billion-dollar enterprise, with over 34 million regular users transacting across different services, including payments, credit, and investments.
According to Safaricom’s CEO, M-Pesa has evolved beyond money transfers to include lending, savings, and investment options, solidifying its role as a key player in Africa’s digital economy.
While the upcoming maintenance may cause temporary disruptions, it reflects Safaricom’s commitment to enhancing its services. Customers can expect an even smoother and more secure M-Pesa experience as the platform continues to evolve.
